Welcome to stardom Arian Foster, I’m the only one who thought you could do it (in July). This past summer, I attended a journalism program at Northwestern University — Cherubs. Nine other kids and I decided to create a fantasy football league and hold an offline draft. The draft was scheduled for the end of July. Sure, we all knew it was much too early for a draft, but it was the only time we could draft in a room all together. So, in the ninth or tenth round of the Cherubs Fantasy Football League draft, I selected Arian Foster. Now remember, at that point in time there was still a running back battle going on between Steve Slaton and Foster. Foster wasn’t even known to most football fans in general. He had a solid final three games at the conclusion of last season so I picked him off of that — and that alone. I received the utmost of criticism from others in my league.

“Who the heck is this guy,” one said.

“Well, looks like you just wasted a pick,” another said. ”I love playing fantasy football with idiots who don’t know how to draft. It just makes it easier for me to win.”

Going into week seven, I’m 6-0. Thank you Mr. Foster.

Arian Foster ran for 231 yards and had three touchdowns in week one of the NFL.

Thank you for stepping up during training camp to get the starting job. Thank you for rushing for over 200 yards week one. Thank you for having the most rushing yards in the NFL as of week six. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

So where I am going with this? Unless you had a vision of the completely unforeseeable future an hour before your fantasy football draft, this year has been tough to predict the fantasy point mavens.

Randy Moss is mediocre. Same holds true with Greg Jennings and Marques Colston. The current top five wide receivers (according to ESPN standard scoring) were — on average — drafted after the fifth round.

No one thought Jeremy Maclin (ranked third among all wide receivers) would be having a better season than his teammate DeSean Jackson — who has been anything but extraordinary.

This year, especially, makes me realize that — unless you are a psychic or are destined to be the luckiest person on Earth — the first four to five rounds of a fantasy draft are where teams are won. A team without a solid base of guys that you know will get you double digit points practically every week will not win games. Everyone always says good fantasy teams are made in the later rounds. I agree, but guessing the guys who will be the breakout stars of the season is nearly impossible.

On average, Foster went in the early eighth round. LaDainian Tomlinson (ranked sixth among running backs) went in the 11th round. Hakeem Nicks (ranked fourth among wide receivers) went in the early seventh round. Vincent Jackson — who has yet to play a game this season — went before guys like Austin Collie (number one ranked wide receiver), Eddie Royal and Mike Williams.

My point: draft on your gut because even the most intricate of computer simulators or the most knowledgable of analysts couldn’t have seen Foster or Collie sitting atop of the running back and wide receiver rankings come week six.

Not a chance.

“Lets get it !! RT @KingJames: Bring home that Gold #TeamUSA!!”

How I See It: Did Amare really just retweet LeBron James? I thought you were better than that, Amare! That’s why you came to New York!

Michael Strahan
“Colts look bad… Patriots good.. Bengals what happened??”

How I See It: Nothing happened to the Colts – Peyton just threw for more than 400 yards. The Texans are now a legitimate team. The Patriots have a healthy Wes Welker and a defense. As for the Bengals – TO joined the team.

Santonio Holmes
“Is it MONDAY yet?”

How I See It: No, it’s Sunday. You know that! And why do you care? You’re not even playing tomorrow…

Mo Williams
“Cincy not looking good at all”

How I See It: Yeah, another Ohio team isn’t going be good either come October. You happen to be on it.

Landon Donovan
“The worst call in the history of football at the end of the Bears-Lions game. I’m not a fan of either team but that was absolutely wrong”

How I See It: Listen to Landon, he knows. He has been victim to way too many bad calls during the World Cup.

Chad OchoCinco
“@terrellowens wake up big bruh, for every negative word uttered about us not working as teammates today let’s unleash hell on the field!!”

How I See It: Well, you guys still lost.

Hakim Warrick
“Pete Carroll is looking like a football genius right now.…”

How I See It: Without a doubt. I can’t believe I’m saying this but the Seahawks could possibly be an above average team this year.

“Good morning world! Time to get that work in! Have a productive day and don’t waste a min or let a opportunity pass u bye. “

How I See It: Well obviously you say that now. You let so many opportunities pass you by in July: The opportunity of saving the Knicks from years of underachievement and to be Cleveland’s favorite athlete from now through eternity … just to name two.

On sportsfanlive.com, there is a blog where writers riff on the most prominent, ludicrous or just plain silly athlete Twitter posts of the day. I recently had my first go at writing the most valuable Tweets for the day:

Sidney Rice
“New blog… Sidneyrice18.com”

How I See It: It looks like Rice’s hip surgery has left him desperate for things to do.

Chad Ochocinco
“Me and baby Carlos jamming to Slique Song addicted http://bit.ly/c6MvEp“

How I See It: Chad rarely fails to amaze me. I don’t know if I’m more shocked that he bought the baby Carlos shirt or that he can actually roller skate backwards.

Jozy Altidore
“What’s up people? 24 is an amazing tv show. Jack Bauer is no joke!”

How I See It: Yeah, we realize it’s a great TV show. You’re about nine years late on the Jack bandwagon.

Chris Bosh
“Training = pain”

How I See It: Creating super-team = annoying for NBA

Ricky Williams
“Commonly asked question…here’s the answer: No more dreads for me. Simple as that. They served a purpose for me then, but no longer.”

How I See It: No worries. Chris Johnson is rocking the dreadlocks now. They seem to have worked for him last season …

Braylon Edwards
“Ok enough serious tweets for the day…every1 tweet @OGOchoCinco & @Lfitzgerald11 tell them how much better than them I am on Madden11 lol”

How I See It: Ochocinco and Fitzgerald each had 1,000-plus receiving yards last season. You didn’t even hit 700. Oh yeah, I heard that players with heavy-duty beards automatically get minus one on their overall rating too.

Tony Hawk
“Found this pic in my phone. Posting it = revenge on my son for making me fat. He could be in a new Austin Powers: http://post.ly/tWix“

How I See It: Ha ha ha, nothing better than a father publicly humiliating his son.

Chad Ochocinco is crazy. You think I’m wrong? Child please! And Terrell Owens is a drama king. They both love the spotlight. They both have their own iPhone/iPod touch application. They both have their own reality show on VH1. Now, they both are on the same team – the Cincinnati Bengals.

This NFL season may turn into one of two things for the Bengals.

1. A wild display of antics from the two receivers. No matter what Marvin Lewis says at the end of training camp, both Ochocinco and TO could believe they are the number one receiver on the team – I don’t care what they will tell the press. I could see them hosting one on one challenges during the game. For example, it’s possible they have a yards after the catch competition where the victor would be treated to a dinner of his choice – or some other creative prize.Welcome everybody… to the NFL’s first ever receiver bromance.

2. A beautiful marriage of two talented wideouts yearning for a Super Bowl ring. Ochocinco did hope that the Bengals would sign TO. In fact, once the Bengals officially signed the free agent, Ochocinco tweeted:

I bet i won’t see all them damn double teams now! Cedric Benson could have a 2,000 yard season with the attention we gonna command

Ochocinco couldn’t be happier. The Bengals – who surprised all with 7-2 start last season – could become an even more promising team. With Benson healthy, two dominant wideouts – both capable of being a number one – and a healthy Carson Palmer in the pocket, things may be looking good for dem Bengals. But if jealousy strikes TO as it struck him in Dallas when he confronted Tony Romo as to why Jason Witten was getting all of the looks, the Bengals could spiral into an uncontrollable dive of destruction.

Thank the Lord! Praise the day! It’s finally happened! As of May 25, the Super Bowl is coming to New York New Jersey.

Honestly, teams that play in cities with blistering winter heat have robbed the New York Giants of a Super Bowl for much too long – well, technically the New York Jets were thieved as well. There’s no explanation for why the Super Bowl has been limited to warm cities for 47 years – the Super Bowl is headed to these stadiums in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

New Meadowlands Stadium will open during the 2010 NFL Season. It was also chosen to host the 2014 Super Bowl.

Thankfully, general managers – who vote yearly on the location of the Super Bowl in four years – agreed with the greater majority of football fans nationwide. According to a May 25 ESPN SportsNation poll of 14,168 people, 51.6 percent said that they think it’s a good idea to potentially have the Super Bowl in New York; 36.2 percent said it was a bad idea; and 12.2 percent just didn’t know.

But seriously, a Super Bowl in cold weather properly describes the league as a whole. Roughly half of the teams that compose the NFL are exposed to cold winter weather – the northern and eastern divisions in the AFC and NFC, excluding the Dallas Cowboys and including the Denver Broncos. NFL general managers have finally awoken from nearly a 50 year daze of Super Bowl stadium exclusion.

Only 19 stadiums across the country have ever hosted the Super Bowl. Some stadiums – such as the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, Calif. and the Orange Bowl in Miami, Fla. – aren’t even home to an NFL team.

A New York New Jersey Super Bowl will not only give some of the best sports fans in the world an better opportunity to go the a marquee sporting event, but it is also a key chance to display a brand new $1.6 billion stadium in New Jersey. When 2014 finally arrives, it will be a beautiful fusion of the greatest fans in the world and the greatest finale of any sporting season.

Before I begin on the most recent NFL off-season trade, I would like to apologize for the lack of posts during the last few weeks. It’s been crazy.

Washington is desperate. It’s understandable, the Redskins have been the doormat of the NFC East for some time now. Coming in last place for the last two seasons cannot be good for any teams moral.

Donovan McNabb isn't the player he used to be. Washington took a huge gamble trading for him.

Though many may disagree, Philadelphia got the better end of this trade. They will receive a second round pick in this years draft and most likely third or fourth rounder next year. Seriously, Kevin Kolb is not as bad. He’s better than other starters around the league, such as Brady Quinn, JaMarcus Russell, Jake Delhomme, Josh Freeman and Matthew Stafford.

In the two games which Kolb started last year, his stats where quite respectable. He threw for 391 yards, two touchdowns, three interceptions and had a passer rating of 73.2 against New Orleans week two. In addition, he thew for 327 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions and had a passer rating of 120.6 against Kansas City week three.

But let’s not forget about the Eagles big off-season pick up last year: Michael Vick. Vick’s ability as a playmaker is still there, somewhere, and a quarterback battle between Kolb and Vick during training camp is inevitable.

Though people may not see it now, Kolb could be just as effective, if not better, than the 2009 version of McNabb.

This column appeared in the March 12 issue of Inklings, the Staples High School newspaper.

Just the thought of the tournament keeps me up at night. I’m fantasizing of past buzzer beating shots, Cinderella teams and of the raw passion that the tournament unleashes.

It’s that time of year again. When people begin to lose their minds and self–control takes a prolonged rain check until mid–April. Hey, it’s understandable. It’s March and the madness has arrived.

It’s grown into a phenomenon, engulfing people of all ages, swallowing alumni whole. It has revolutionized the month of March and has set the bar unreachably high for any other sporting tournament. Since 1939, the Men’s NCAA Tour- nament has captured the hearts of sports fans and has never let them go.

It’s a time when the little man can win. It’s the party where Cinderella doesn’t have to leave at midnight. Instead, she can dance her way into the Final Four. Just think of eleventh seeded George Mason back in the 2006. Who would have thought the Patriots wouldn’t take off their dancing shoes after their elite eight meeting with the number one seeded UConn? It’s just the beauty of the tournament. Every team is a sleeper. Except a 16 seed, that’s one up- set that has not and should not ever happen. It’s the equivalent of David slaying Goliath. In no other sport at the professional or college level are the stakes as high as March Madness. It is a school’s date with glory and fame. After a competitive regular season, the NCAA tournament is a blend of triumph, failure, passion, talent and sheer effort in the most effective three–week postseason in sport.

Unlike other sports, where the elite teams bench their top players going into the post season, college teams do not. Take this year; Robbie Hummel of Purdue is sidelined for March Madness due to a late injury.

Fans love it. They crave it. March Madness is a sports fan’s form of cocaine. One shot and they’re hooked. It makes them want more. It’s tourny time, and people are hooked on the March Madness drug.

If you have not yet experienced this tournament, please do so. Put homework on hold. Turn on CBS. Feel the passion. Watch five minutes worth of any game, and I’m sure I’ll be seeing you in drug rehab.

Anquan Boldin is a great fit with Baltimore. Looking early ahead to next season, it seems that Boldin will be Joe Flacco’s number one receiving target. However, the Ravens to like Derrick Mason. This will be a good competition come training camp.

Boldin will be a key component that the Ravens lacked last season. Obviously power football led them into the playoffs and was a key factor in their upset win over the New England Patriots. However, with a powerful air game, the Ravens could have had a better showing against a talented Colts squad.

For Boldin, being a Raven means one thing for his NFL career: he no longer lives in the shadow of Larry Fitzgerald. Yes, we all know that Boldin is a marquee wide receiver in the league but he has never had a chance to be: the guy. That title belonged to Fitzgerald in Arizona.

Plus, let’s not forget that Kurt Warner retired soon after the Super Bowl. Without a doubt, Arizona will struggle this next year. If they choose put the future of the franchise in Matt Leinart’s hands, I don’t expect they will see fantastic numbers in his first season as the clear starter.

Last night, I started watching the USA vs. Canada Olympic hockey match with about 10 minutes left in the third period. Within those 10 minutes, hockey was no longer the “unlegit” big four sport in the U.S… it became just the worst sport.

That game last night marked the first time I saw a hockey game for more than one whole minute. For some reason I became captivated in the harsh brutality of the sport. I mean seriously, it puts pro football to shame.

Now don’t get me wrong. Between football, basketball, baseball and hockey, hockey still ranks dead last in importance to the average American citizen. But what I am saying is that for everyone that has never watch a hockey game before, maybe you should give it a chance. Well, if you think about it, in an extremely broad sense hockey is the same thing as basketball on ice, except the final scores in hockey rarely break a combined 10 goals whereas the final scores in basketball break a combined 200 points.

Anyway all I’m saying is give hockey a chance. I did and now I consider it the worst sport of the big four U.S. sports. I guess that’s better than believing that there was only three big U.S. sports.
